Home Teams Roll On, 4 Overtime Thriller in Boston

The theme of home court dominance continued today, but not without plenty of action.

In one of the most memorable games in America East lore, Boston University edged Stony Brook 99-97 in quadruple overtime. That is not a typo. 4 overtimes. The Terriers, who got 33 points from Corey Lowe led throughout, growing their lead to as much as 11 in the second half, but the Seawolves fought back and sent the game to overtime on a 3-pointer by Muhammad El-Amin as time expired. Lowe, who had 21 in overtime alone, provided the most exciting moment of the extra fame. The all-conference guard slashed through the lane and flipped the ball up and in with 2 seconds left in the second session to extend the game, which his team eventually won. John Holland, the America East Player of the Week, played all 60 minutes and provided 29 points. Chris Martin led SBU with 26 points, 17 of them coming in overtime.

The game was just the second America East contest to go four overtimes and it happened 13 years ago to the day, January 19, 1996 when New Hampshire downed Maine 106-103 in four extra sessions

Not to be outdone, Maine and New Hampshire also had a thriller in Orono as the Black Bears outlasted the Wildcats 78-75 in double overtime. Gerald McLemore, who sent the game to extra time on a layup with 6 seconds left, finished with a team-high 17. Sean McNally added his second-straight double-double with 10 points and 10 boards for Maine, which matches last year's conference win total of 3. Tyrece Gibbs again tied his career high with 22 points for the Wildcats, who had won two straight and 4-of-5 coming in.

Binghamton went on an extended 32-9 run down the stretch to down Hartford 66-59 and snap a three-game losing skid. The Bearcats got 50 points from their bench as D.J. Rivera (24 points), Malik Alvin (16) Emanuel Mayben (10) all sat out to start. Rivera had 18 of those 24 in the second half. Jaret von Rosenberg had a team-high 12 points for Hartford, while Michael Turner added 11 points and 9 boards.

Since starting 0-2 in conference play, Vermont has won 3 straight following tonight's 74-47 triumph over UMBC at Patrick Gym. The Catamounts outrebounded the Retrievers 50-29 and held their opponent to 1-of-9 three-pointshooting. Marqus Blakely stopped a seven-game stretch without a double-double tallying 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and grabbing a season-high 17 rebounds. Maurice Joseph added a career-high 19 in 21 minutes off the bench. Darryl Proctor led UMBC with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Chauncey Gilliam, starting in place of the injured Jay Greene, contributed 15 points and 9 boards.

Bearcats Keep Rolling, Albany & Maine Grab First Win On Wild Night

It was a pivotal night in America East for many reasons. First off, Binghamton kept rolling with a thrilling 91-83 overtime victory against Vermont the Bearcats' 6th straight win. The Bearcats (3-0 America East, 10-4 overall) led througout but the Catamounts (0-1, 9-5) were able to force the extra session. D.J. Rivera scored 6 of his 29 points in overtime. The America East's leading scorer (21.6 ppg) also grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds. Maurice Joseph led Vermont with a career-high 18.

Boston University, in the midst of a four-game losing skid, received more bad news that was confirmed before their conference opener at Albany. Key guards Tyler Morris and Carlos Strong are both out for the season with knee injures. If that wasn't enough, Corey Lowe (17.6 ppg) did not play after getting ejected in the Terriers' previous game against Holy Cross. Despite all that, Boston U. (0-1, 5-8) led 62-61 with less than 20 seconds left, but Tim Ambrose was fouled and sank both freebies with 12.3 second left and Matt Wolff's 16-footer at the buzzer caught the back of the iron. Maine earned its first conference win of the season at Stony Brook, which had won 7 of 10 coming in. The Black Bears (1-1, 6-9) jumped out to an 18-point lead in the first half and never looked back. Maine's balanced scoring attack was led by Junior Bernal and Malachi Peay each had 12 points. Mark Socoby had 11, while Gerald McLemore added 10.
